The Culture
Alumni define the culture. From the moment someone walks through the door, they should feel the bigger picture — this isn't just treatment, it's the foundation of a lifelong community.
Invite staff into Alumni meetings. When they share their own milestones and stories, they become more relatable — breaking down the walls between "staff" and "client." What truly matters is whether a client can buy in. More often than not, it's the influence of staff and leadership that makes recovery look more attractive than the life they left behind.
Celebrate every milestone. Sobriety, mental health, and wellness achievements should be recognized and shared. Send monthly emails highlighting the total years of sobriety achieved within the facility. Share quarterly or annual reports with staff and alumni, to reinforce the program's impact. Use push notifications in the alumni app to spotlight these wins — building a shared sense of pride and momentum.
Honor milestones in lasting ways. Recognition is good; remembrance is better. When someone reaches an anniversary or accomplishment, create something permanent to mark it: a name on the meeting wall, a plaque in the alumni room, or a brick walkway engraved with alumni names — the literal footsteps of those who came before.
Culture is everything. The traditions you build today will define the experience for generations of alumni to come. Make it matter.
